A few weeks ago in the Guardian there was a review of a new film called Separate Lies, based on the 1950s book A Way Through the Wood by Nigel Balchin. Film and book are both set among prosperous Home Counties people. The reviewer (Peter Bradshaw) wrote "I haven't read Balchin's novel, but I bet he didn't make all his characters non-smokers in 1951. They are in the film."

I was able to write in and point out that not only did they all smoke in the book, but the central character was a director of a cigarette company.
