I think that three cheers was and is still very much a sporting thing - the only time I have heard it is on the rugby field when it is traditionally and formally shouted at the beginning and the end of the game by each team to the other - three cheers for the Pittwater Pirates - Hip hip hooray, hip hip hooray, hip hip hooray.
AR as a Rugbean (albeit reluctantly) would have heard that chant very frequently. Remember also that throughout his life he retained good relations with friends from school (wasn't Altounyan a Rugbean) for whom rugby football would have been less of a trauma.
