Prue, I think there were many middle class officers in WW1. I can cite my own family as an example - in no way upper class. All the close male relatives except my father (who was too young) died in the slaughter.

Due to the level of slaughter, people ended up in odd regiments to make up numbers ( my paternal grandfather - Royal Welsh Fusiliers, invalided out from the Somme ), and if survived even working class / lower middle class could be made officers ( Great Uncle Bert MC eventually became Captain in MGC and survived ).
