I just feel the need to respond to John's comment that most North American mountains "worthy of the name" are covered in ice and snow. Ahem, John - there is an entire chain of mountains, the oldest in the world I believe, that are rolling and green and snow-topped only during the appropriate season. Mt Mitchell at 6,684 feet above sea level is the tallest in the chain. My family walked to the summit, and while the Park Service had all kinds of museums, shops, and an observation tower, I don't recall a summit register. Probably because so many people get to the top, the accumulated registers would resemble a large collection of telephone directories. We did take pictures, though.
