I once heard a dowser claim that he could dowse for water over a map of the locality!

Bovine droppings.

Bovine droppings, yourself. My grandfather's a dowser and dowses maps all the time. He dowsed a well for us, on an island in Maine, while looking at a map of the island in his home in Virginia. He sent us the map, marked with the spot to drill and the estimate "water somewhere between 75 and 100'"; we had the drillers set up where he said to drill and they hit good water at 85'. The well drillers then overshot to 300' (we weren't there and they were billing by the foot), hit the salt table, and ruined the well. They were good enough to admit their mistake and sink a concrete plug to 95', but the well is a bit touchy anyhow and comes up brackish if we draw too hard from it.

The really weird dowsing he does is finding old classmates by dowsing a map of the country. From Virginia, he found a classmate living in California.

300 years ago, he'd have been burned at the stake for witchcraft. Now, he's sort of the family treasure. And as an AR fan himself, Titty's scene is one of his favorites.

I've done a bit of successful dowsing, on location and mostly using the two L-rods, but it was a long time ago, and I've found that I can't just pick it up and do it wih as much success as when I was doing it on a regular basis. From my experience, I'd say one has to practice, and then stay in practice.
