If I have to remove a screw from the keel plank then I have a lot more problems than the problem of getting a soft screw out of the wood. I am sure a drill bit would take care of it nicely.

No, I am not exempt, I have had to rebuild lots of things. I doubt that I would be replacing that garboard plank as it is epoxy set into the keel. Now that might prove to be a bigger problem in the long run if the keel or the garboard planks do need repair.

But I was concerned at getting a good bond between the 1 inch keel plank and the 2 - 0.5 inch garboard planks. The bend in the three planks is significant and I was sure that copper rivets and bonding compound would not hold the keel plank down - hence the old conservative engineer adding belt, and braces. I was sure that copper rivets at 3 inch centres even set with a ball preen hammer would be inadequate and I did not want to find that out the hard way.

We shall see.

And we are all allowed to learn from our mistakes.
