You are correct in your suspicions regarding copper rivets even though they may have been work hardened with your ball peen hammer. The only rivets that can be trusted in a pressure/stress situation are hot iron ones and these need maintenance in a marine environment. Unfortunately they are becoming difficult to locate in the UK.
I would have more faith in epoxy - it is holding together many parts of the aeroplanes in service today.
But one is instinctively happier with belt and braces or am I getting old?
