There is no doubt that dowsing produces something - at least that metal rods or hazel twigs produce strange movements in your hands. It has happened to me and to lots of people I have tried without telling them what to expect. But what it means is another matter altogether! I certainly couldn't identify the site of a former building, but when I was head of a Department which included Building Control my hard bitten officers routinely used the rods to locate drains and other underground objects.

The East Anglia Books more than 'seem' to be based on real locations - beyond doubt they are. You can - and I often do - navigate the Broads, the Orwell and Secret Water without looking at anything but the end papers. The only significant omissions are Dr Dudgeon and Mr Farland's houses and Sinbad's Creek. And Felixstowe has now changed more than a bit, but the descriptions were accurate when I first knew it in the 1960s.
