It is interesting to note from this thread on water, that at some stage most large cities relied on communal water points. Hence the cholera outbreaks and the groundbreaking research in London on working out the sources of Cholera. I forget the person's name who did this first such study.

From the look of Holly Howe the water was brought down from the fells. You only need a small diameter pipe witht he ground slopes in region to supply a household.

The interesting thing is the bathing in the river in PM on the first morning.
