My take on Bob at present is that he was possibly a 'Jacky' - being one of a farming family's offspring, although nothing is said about Bob's family and local relatives are also not mentioned.
The GA disliked him because she had Victorian delusions of pretention, and discouraged her niece and nephew from associating with him and his like, although she must have eventually come to terms with Molly marrying him - possibly only after his death. It would account somewhat for her determination to see that Nancy & Peggy were brought up correctly.
Beckfoot was left to Jim and possibly Molly through the family(their father being the GA's elder brother?) and they were brought up there by the GA.
What Bob was in WW1 is problematic - certainly at that time many of the forces only had 'upper-class' men as officers, but who knows...
