Peter, I agree. In the 60's and before, there were distinct categories of books for boys and girls. Even though I generally preferred boys stories because of the action, I never thought to question it.
Even now, if a book has a female heroine it's thought it's 'only' a girl's book, while male heroes are suitable for either, possibly why there is the Harry Potter series instead of the Hermione Granger series.
