if a book has a female heroine it's thought it's 'only' a girl's book, while male heroes are suitable for either

Prue - isn't this because girls will read books with either male or female heroes, but boys simply won't read books about girls and even if they do they are ragged about it? Certainly I was never interested in what I thought were 'girls' books'. Now is this narrower approach (or prejudice, if you like) hard-wired into human males, or can it be corrected by education? And if it can, should it? I think this is AndyB's territory . . . .
