I've been thinking about the dynamic of Mr. Dixon and how he works with the D's to make sure that they have as much as the Swallows and Amazons. Something about 'the explorers from his farm should do as well as that lot from Jackson's.' (from memory, so I guarantee it's not word-for-word)
Somehow, that little section makes me believe that there are years of rivalry, although a polite one, between the two farms. Did Jackson's cow get a higher price at auction than Mr. Dixon's? Did Dixon prevail at the agricultural show? Perhaps the Jacksons don't like the famous Dixon pork pie. Something seems to be going on.
