I think Pam is right that this is friendly competitiveness and not a grudge matter. It seems very typical of Cumbrians to want to compete with neighbours, whether it is in hound trailing, sheep dog trials, wrestling or a tug-of-war (which is where I assume the phrase 'pull our weight' came from). As witness the annual 'Grasmere Sports':
