I adore musicals, and I have a pretty vivid imagination, but it is beyond my capabilities to imagine how this could work. Roger singing his way up the field, arms outspread, as the first scene? The Swallows bellowing away as they sail away to the island? How to give the magnificence of the "inland sea" while on stage? I am willing to withold my judgement until it shows, but it is hard to withold my inner disgust at the idea of trivializing the story, which must be nearly impossible to avoid.

But as in many areas of our modern life, we can, to paraphrase Titty in WH, "count it a seal"!
