Back to Jilly Cooper, formerly with Punch before its sad demise. Her unforgivable jibe at "those awful sexless Swallowe and Amazons" is probably the result of observing some of today's adolescents and drawing comparisons. Her comment tells us more about the poor woman than it does about our beloved stories and the people who make them come alive. If they had been falling in love with each other, they would have lost interest in those adventures and there would have been no SA, SW, PD, etc. etc. One of the reasons I enjoy the stories so much as that they are blessedly free of sexual or romantic entanglements. Having just watched part of the SA video clip, I am struck by the fact that they are CHILDREN. Having known them since I was a child myself, they seem to be ageless. It's a sudden shock, therefore, to realize they are not that far removed from the nursery. If only I could have shared in adventures like that when I was a boy.
