I am a tenter. My first week long camp was with the Girl Guides when I was nine. My grandmother was a keen guider so my younger brothers and I joined her for a camp with the girls. My brother tells me now nearly forty years later that the best advice I have ever given him was not to tell his schoolboy friends all the details of who he was with on his camping holiday.

My ultimate Ransomeite camping moment was my first summer in Canada in 1983 when a friend and I drove five hours north of Toronto towing a dinghy. We arrived at the camp site and he announced that he had left the tent poles in his apartment. I had lent my tent to another couple of friends so they were all right.
Luckily there were some trees surrounding our space and remembering Swallows and Amazons, I rigged up a line between two covenient trees which we threaded through the ridge of the tent through the holes where the spikes on the tent poles would go and pegged out the tent as usual. It worked perfectly and we had a useful clothes line as well.
