In recent years, some men have started wearing hats again, probably for sun protection. But at one time, being outdoors without a hat or cap would have been almost as bad as being outdoors without your trousers.
Look at any picture of men in crowds in the 19th and earlier parts of the 20th century and you will hardly find anyone without some sort of head wear.
All of a sudden, sometime in the 1950s or early 1960s, hats were doffed. I remember having to wear a school cap but only in elementary school and only on formal occasions. Since then I have only ever owned a sun hat bought in recent years and still not very often worn.
