A couple of years ago my local council didn't celebrate Christmas at all - they celebrated something called Winterval. Luckily there was so much of an outcry that they reinstated Christmas the following year.

"Christmas" being a muddled mish mash of various vaguely symbolic mythic flummery patched onto a pre-existing mid winter festival.

I see no reason why a council - a body representing people of many different religions and none - should celebrate just a single religion's mid winter festival. Promoting 'Winterval' a period when people celebrate their mid winter festivals with some degree of civil civic togetherness seems quite sensible.

Seem to recall that it was the godly parliamentary party of Cromwell's time that actually banned Christmas.
