I could argue that what was a through train from Preston to Windermere, albeit appearing to terminate at Oxenholme but then also start from there 11 minutes later in the timetable, would still probably use the mainline side of the platform (nowadays, and probably then too, Platform 2). If there was a perfectly serviceable junction to Windermere just north of the platforms, why use the branch platform side (Platform 3) unless it would block a north-bound train due through - unlikely, but someone will be able to check timetables?
Well, there is a further textual difficulty which goes against my theory, so don your anoraks once more: when they arrive at Windermere, Roger says "the platform's on the other side". Normally you'd expect it to be on the right hand side for arrivals at Windermere (though there may be reasons why not e.g. a train already waiting there), which is the same side as Platform 2 at Oxenholme: whereas if it had left from Platform 3, the branch platform, this would make it the other side.
So take your pick on what you want to believe: in the meantime I'll stick to my newfound theory that the image is not mirrored but is of the North end of Platform 2, with the North East end of the main station building being the wall behind, and the hills in the drawing being pretty realistic.

Oh, I've posted a .pdf diagram of Oxenholme past and present, from an Excel spreadsheet, into the files area of the Yahoo Group site to try and help.
