Oh I'm not suggesting it's the only bit of Beckfoot - there definitely isn't a river or an octopus lagoon or even an Amazon valley (Belle Grange Beck is little more than a trickle). The promontory seems more prominent when you're there than it does on a map or from above - I think it's because it is quite an unusual hillock. I've stood on it (I'm not sure I was meant to) and you look down on the house and the boathouse and you do feel that you're out into the water. It's fully wooded now, but I've seen maps where it is bare of trees, like in the painting. It would have looked quite noticable from the lake I think. I'm trying to find a photograph!
