I know about all that - Received Pronunciation and so on, but I cannot imagine Nancy working "very hard to develop a proper accent". In any case, she never uses local expressions, such as 'happen that - ', 'nowt amiss', etc. Would she try to overcome her use of the local accent? I just cannot see that 'msterful young womnan' apologizing for the way she speaks by trying to overcome it. Neither would she downplay her regional accent at any school she attended to avoid being laughed at. Who on earth would dare to laugh at Nancy! I think she has assumed the speech patterns and accent of her parents who, although they MIGHT have been born and bred in the Lake District, nevertheless, did not speak with the local accent. Good discussion, keep it up.
