I suspect that Ross used the term "so-called" lakes because he lives near and sails on one the Great Lakes which are just a little bit bigger than Windermere or Coniston.
I mean, how can you call a body of water where you can see the opposite shore, a real lake?
Perhaps Robert Dilley will tell you of his conversation with the Austrian students beside Lake Superior.
