I seem to recall that the replica cutter for HMS Victory, built for the Society for Nautical Research, is of glued-ply clinker construction. Some may say it's a cheat, but they made it using modern techniques for precisely the same cost, ease-of-use and lower-maintenance advantages suggested by David. And it still looks gorgeous!

I'd order a ply & glue lapstrake lugsail dinghy tomorrow, if I could afford it. It wouldn't be the Swallow of course, but if it sailed like it, and looked like it...well, I think that that would be a success in its own right.
