You are quite right about the entry age for some public schools Colin.
However the public school that was unfortunate enough to try and educate me had an entry age of 11.
The headmaster of the preparatory school I attended, although it bore a name that related it to the public school, did not like the public school as it meant a loss of 2 to 3 years fee income to him.

Overall I was at public school for 8 years as were many of my contemporaries. Certainly when I was there in the 1950/60s, no one ever thought of playing soccer at school, however I think in the 1990's it was introduced and now flourishes.

In those days, rugby and cricket were the major sports. Minor sports were boxing, fencing, shooting, athletics, swimming, hockey, fives, tennis and gymnastics. There may have been others that I have forgotten.

However I think most public schools played these sports as there were always many inter-school matches and tournaments.
