How can you "willfully misunderstand" ? OK pretend to understand if you prefer. Otherwise I don't disagree with any of Peter H's post except to agree with the caveat that what appears as "decayed gentility" may be "change of fashion". It is of course arguable that if the family were, as they appear to be, living on independent means that would make on the fringes of the upper class rather than upper middle class.
If I remember correctly,one of the origins of this debate (back in the mists of time) was someone challenging the assumption that Bob Blackett had been an officer in WW1. Now I'm all for challenging assumptions and as BB is an imaginary literary character AR could have given him any biography he could make credible. But if he had been an historical character, married into a family of such a "recognisble type" and if he had fought in WW1, he would have been recognised as ipso facto a member of the officer class and probably, but not necessarily have been an officer.
BTW Peter H I like your analysis of Nancy as deus (dea?)ex machina, it would make an excellent topic for an 'extended essay'.
