Ed - Laura Ingalls Wilder wrote in the late 1800's of cooking and living just like that, and in one of her books 'Farmer Boy', the bathing routine for six people was explained much as you have told it. This way of life is so interesting, being the extremely hard working norm for most people yet now just a memory for the privileged few.
Being a fine cook, maybe Mrs Dixon preferred to finish off her bacon holding it closer over the fire than the trivet would do so, and the range having been used at a cooler temperature for porridge, she wanted higher heat for just the short time good bacon takes.
