The presence of Mavis/Amazon in The Windermere Steamboat Museum and at Coniston has given many people a great thrill and a lasting memory. I once saw a Japanese lady overcome with emotion as she caressed Mavis's bow. The renaming was harmless and and has given a great deal of pleasure, although it was intended to provide a grand gesture to enliven up an otherwise business meeting when TARS was formed.
The serious Ransome scholar in search of evidence for Amazon looks in vain, however. I agree, Ed that we search for real places and real boats, but sometimes they do not exist. So I would say, 'Why should AR's drawing look like Mavis more than any other dinghy?'
