I have to agree with John. The author's job finished when the work that he produced was published. It is not up to certain readers to rewrite it. If they choose to impose their own self-censorship, then that is a matter for them. I personally think that cocooning oneself from the realities of either the past or the present through censorship of any kind does not actually help eliminate the undesirable things in the world. It is only by understanding them and dealing with them head on that one can really come to terms with these kinds of things. So I suggest that we leave AR as is and try to work out what is bad about the terms "nigger" and "negroes" - are the words bad in themselves or are they bad because of the attitude they convey when they are used? And what is the attitude that is conveyed when AR uses them?
