Today, the 4th August 2001, two separate groups of Austars, The VicTars from the Melbourne area and the WaraTahs from Sydney climbed local peaks on the centenary of the climb of the Matterhorn.
Both parties had good weather, but although we looked for the Isle of Man, we were unable to catch sight of it! Perhaps there was a fog out at sea!
Banksia cone patterans were laid on the hike, Cairns were built on the peaks, and centenary coins and notes in tin boxes were buried under the rocks. Lemonade and doughnuts were enjoyed at the top, and the Susans were kept busy handing out chocolate rations.
We toasted AR and our fellow Tars round the world and thought of the Tars climbing the Old Man of Coniston.
Lots of fun and a very pleasant day was had by all.
