I know there is quite a lot of prior art wrt this subject, so I wonder if anyone has considered AR's alma mater, Rugby as a possible boarding school for one of his characters?
Rugby was unusually modern in its approach and encouraged boys to develop their practical and scientific abilities as well as the classical learning more commonly associated with British Public Schools. (AR built a small stationary steam engine whilst a pupil there.)
Dick's mechanical abilities and scientific must have been nurtured somewhere. Perhaps Rugby?
