On the subject of young readers, it has long irritated me that the blurb for BS in the back of the Puffin editions reads: ".... Mr Ransome once again equals or perhaps excels himself, and every boy who enjoys him - and every boy does - will vote this detective story super." This quote is attributed to Rosamund Lehmann in the New Statesman. I don't know who Rosamund was (or is?), or when she wrote that, but it's horrifying! How can she think that the S&A books are only suitable for boys?
