Yes, that's probably it - if you've climbed 9,000 feet you probably feel you ought to sign a book to prove you've done it and survived. Most UK hills are under 3,000. Mind you, the fuss some people make, they could all be Kanchenjunga. I heard someone doing a broadcast this afternoon (Radio 4 - UK) while 'climbing' Moel Famau in North Wales. This hill is 1,800 feet high and has a nice easy 8 foot wide path going up it. I can see it from my front window - a low mound on the horizon. Yet the presenter was puffing and blowing... Back on topic, can anyone in the US confirm that they do have 'registers' on the top of mountains?

(By the way, talking of Florida, whatever happened to Ed Kiser?)
