Unfortunately Susan shows the stress of always being the 'responsible' one with her snide remarks and constant put downs to those younger than herself. Recently reading Secret Water for the umpteenth time I noted several instances of almost nannyish bossiness from her such as when Roger wanted to try the splatchers.
I suppose a Susan is needed in order for the Swallows & Amazons to be able to have the freedom they enjoy without older natives tagging along, but she's such a pill! I often wondered if on her own she would do anything adventurous.
