Nancy, Daisy, Port and Starboard, even Titty at times, break the housekeeper-follower stereotype. Prejudice about what girls were like, and what they were supposed to like, was even stronger when AR was writing the SA canon. AR broke down the barriers for a whole generation of young female readers.
