"However, I also agree with the idea that AR might not have really known much about school details."

I suspect as a boarder at a public school (Rugby) he would have known about quarantine and having a responsible adult (usually a parent or guardian) sign a certificate saying that one had not been in contact with any infectious disease during the holidays.
The S&A's all seem to have been boarders.
The system seemed the same as when I attended school in the 1950/60's. One had to give the certificate to the boarding house matron on return from holiday.
For some reason, verbal claims that one had contracted bubonic plague and anthrax, plus (in Titty's words) the odd plague and fever during the holidays were ignored.
The school had a requirement, before entry into the school, that one had a smallpox booster vaccination. I was also immunised against diphtheria because I had a predilection for playing in muddy brooks and canals, but this was not a school requirement. When the Salk vaccine became available, everyone had an injection at school.
I think schools were well aware of the possibility of infection, especially when boarders went home to their parents in South America or the Far East.
