I'm not sure that it's wilfulness, but the changing times. I don't know about conditions in England, but in my US middle-class family in the 1960's and 70's, both of my parents worked at professional careers. Despite two paychecks, live-in servants and boarding schools weren't affordable options for us.
When I look at the home-life of the Blacketts, with a good-sized house, live-in help, a non-working single parent, and an uncle able to travel the world on expeditions, it's hard not to believe that they have more money available than my family did. From there, it's a fairly easy jump to assume that they are of a higher class than I am.
