Here's a reasonable view of that skeg on a modern-built clinker dinghy.
It'll run into a keel about 2" deep along the bottom of the boat. (Swallow's keel was deeper, of course.) For a centreboard dinghy like Amazon and Scarab, they'll be a slot in the keel for the board.
